In 1920, Hsu was born in Hua Yuan District, Tainan City. His home is the second house from the right behind two trees on the right side of the painting. On the left, there’s the old library which is partially depicted. This building became a shopping center later called Yuan Dong Department Store. As the sun sets, the farmer is rushing home with the cow and wagon, a flock of birds fly away in the distant skies. The big ditch that once passed through Hsu’s family home is now transformed into big roads. Back in elementary school, Hsu once fell into the big ditch from fooling around and had to spend a month in recovery; this event made a deep impression on him. The orange toned home, peaceful and warm atmosphere, simple Tainan City, the old views of southern Taiwan, the old libraries, street trees, cow wagons, oranges, chickens… everything is gone and have fallen into the abyss of people’s memories.
